Finding value in ante-post betting markets is usually a task that even Sherlock Holmes would struggle to accomplish, but the Cheltenham Festival is a little different.
The standard of horses at jump racing’s showpiece event is incredibly high which means supremely talented runners are available to back at bigger prices than they usually would be, such is the level of competition.
Finding these horses is probably the best way to go about finding great value at the Festival.

The quality of this year’s Cheltenham Gold Cup is anything but a novice renewal and the front two in the market, Long Run (9/4) and Kauto Star, should have the race between them with the preference for the former, who should go on to repeat last year’s victory.
Nicky Henderson’s star stayed on strongly behind the evergreen Kauto Star in the King George Chase at Kempton and will relish a return to a stiff track like Cheltenham that despite being a two-time Gold Cup winner has never actually played to Kauto Star’s strengths.
As with every Cheltenham Festival there is likely to be a couple of horses where defeat is out of the question, otherwise known as a banker, and this year’s looks to be Hurricane Fly (5/6) in the Champion Hurdle.
