Cheltenham’s October meeting, the first of the new season at HQ, was renamed The Showcase in 2007 and moved to its present Friday/Saturday slot.
The popular two-day meeting is a natural starting point for horses returning from their summer breaks and is often used in preparation for The Open (Friday, November 14 – Sunday, November 16 inclusive) at the course.
Yesterday’s action was good, but things really get going today with some cracking racing for this time of year.
The Saturday card is headlined by two £50,000 handicap chases. First up is the two and a half-mile Marie Curie Cancer Care Handicap Chase (2.35pm), which serves as a trial for the Grade Three Paddy Power Gold Cup, the £160,000 feature race at The Open.

That’s where we looking to find some value this year as horses at the bottom of the weights regularly perform well with their eyes firmly on the main prize in November.
Johns Spirit completed the double impressively for trainer Jonjo O’Neill and jockey Richie McLernon last year but is surely too high in the weights to make a significant impression this time around.
Money should be invested in the chances of Claret Cloak for the strong Emma Lavelle yard.
This progressive chaser looks set for a good season over the large obstacles after impressing late last term with top efforts in handicap company. He finished a beaten favourite of the Grand Annual at the Festival last spring, finishing a good third after messing up the last.
That is very strong form and the way in which the selections travels through his races makes him a big player in all these types of big runner handicap chases. Snap up the odds advertised.
Meanwhile, at Ascot, and the best bet of the day on Champions Day simply has to be the chances of Albasharah in the Group One Qipco British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes at 2:55. This is a filly going places in the mud.
She romped home in a Listed event in testing conditions a couple of weeks back and is a horse to follow.
Albasharah produced a performance that would have seen her go well in many a Group 1 against her own sex, absolutely thrashing the promising Talmada, who was in turn well clear of the others.
This doesn’t look overly deeper in terms of quality therefore the selection should be on the premises if repeating her Listed form.
