Chris Smalling in contention for starting role – Manchester United team news

The Red Devils would be looking to continue the fine vein of form they have experienced in the past month as they take on Newcastle United at Old Trafford

Alan Pardew’s men have just arrived at Old Trafford and are entering the stadium looking to get the better of Louis van Gaal’s side who have performed excellently in the last few weeks.

Despite injuries to many players, United are set to welcome back defender Chris Smalling who has recovered from his groin injury. The former Fulham man is expected to play some part in the Boxing Day clash and could even start the game.

Marcos Rojo is a major doubt because of the thigh injury that has sidelined him in the last two games but Radamel Falcao could start the game after a promising display in the 1-1 draw against Aston Villa at the Villa Park last week.

Luke Shaw is nearing fitness once more but is unlikely to feature in the game against the Magpies and in his place, Ashley Young will continue in the role of left wing back.

An illness keeps Marouane Fellaini out of the game once again but the Belgian is expected to be fit in a few days.
