City midfielders injury fears dismissed

Manchester City have insisted that midfielder Owen Hargreaves has not suffered a major injury setback after it was revealed he won’t play in the Carling Cup tie with Wolves.

The injury prone England midfielder was expected to start at Molineux on Wednesday night but a slight calf problem has sidelined him once again.

He has already made a few appearances for the Citizens playing 57 minutes against Birmingham in the cup five weeks ago whilst he came on as a substitute in the recent 4-1 win over Aston Villa.

Despite spending the best part of two years out with knee injuries whilst at Manchester United coach David Platt has insisted the injury isn’t serious and there are no worries over his long-term fitness

Platt said: “There is no worry about it. He has got a little niggle that because it is Owen Hargreaves we are talking about it,”

“It is nothing much, it is just a kick in the calf. We have had it scanned and there is no pull or anything.

“He has not broken down. If he had broken down we would be talking about him being out for three or four weeks but that is not the case.”

City have decided not to risk him for the fourth round tie with manager Roberto Mancini having a wealth of midfield options to choose from for the trip to the Midlands.
