It has been just under a year since Rafa Benitez parted company with Liverpool. After a reign of immaculate highs of winning arguably the best ever Champions League final and frustrating lows with failing to qualify for the Champions League in the 2009-2010 season, Benitez left Anfield thought to never return. But now the Spanish tactician wants a ‘dream’ return to Anfield.
After leaving Anfield, Benitez was tasked with fulfilling the impossible boots of former manager Jose Mouriniho who had left the San Siro for Real Madrid after winning Seria A, the Champions League and not losing a home game in his time in charge. Unfortunately, Benitez was released after only six months at Inter and is now looking for new employers. Benitez admitted that he would take back the reigns if offered the job in the summer and admitted it would be a ‘dream’ to return sometime in the future. Furthermore, Benitez was recently staying I Liverpool after parting ways with Milan.
Benitez is not the favorite to be in charge of Liverpool’s next campaign. Current caretaker manager Kenny Dalglish is expected to be awarded a permanent contact after averaging two points a game since overtaking the Reds in January. Liverpool has been a changed team since the takeover of the Scot and is now outsiders to take fourth spot after significant victories over Manchester United and Chelsea. However, after losses to relegation teams like West Ham, the chances look slim.
Rafa is not the loved manager he used to be and there are also other managers currently out of work. Moreover, the type of football which he would play as manager of Liverpool is significantly different to that of Dalglish’s which is currently very successful at the Kop. The question on every fan’s lips on the contention will be if it’s not broken why try and fix it?
