Netherlands goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg has insisted that he will be happy to stay at Ajax on improved terms from next season if no other offers comes in and even claims that anyone not wanting to join Premiership Champions Manchester United would be “insane”.
The goalkeeper has been under the radar of Arsenal and Manchester United for some time with both Premiership sides linked with a possible summer move for the 28 year old. Stekelenburgs contract also comes to and end in 2012 and it was believed the Eredivisie club would cash in this summer.
Stekelenburg however, has discussions ongoing in Ajax but is awaiting other offers.
“I have received a fantastic offer from Ajax which is under consideration, there has been nothing else, zero. Maybe because I have been injured.”
Asked regarding a move to Manchester United Stekelenburg responded.
“Anybody who does not want to play for Manchester United would be insane.”
The Dutch number one added.
“I wanted to see how things develop, nothing has happened, so I will talk with Ajax. I have had a fantastic time here and I have great respect for the board.”
“I have always been treated very well. They have made a fantastic offer, and a second meeting is scheduled. But it has to do with whether anything else might come my way.”
His latest statement certainly shows he is willing to play football elsewhere but whether Arsenal or Manchester United are srious about the goalkeeper remains a mystery at this time.
