England star wary of lack of European football

Bolton defender Gary Cahill is aware that his chances of a regular spot in the England squad could be harmed after he failed to secure a move to a ‘top-four’ Premier League side.

Tottenham, Liverpool and Arsenal were all being associated with a move for the centre-back, but a transfer never materialised.

Chelsea are now in the hunt for Cahill, as it’s doubtful that he will sign a contract extension at the Reebok Stadium, and as he’s in the last year of his current contract, he could be available for as little as £8m in January.

The defender scored the first goal in England’s 3-0 victory over Bulgaria on Friday, and says that succeeding in an England strip is one of his biggest goals.

The 25 year-old isn’t letting the attention go to his head however, stating: “There’s nothing I can do. When the window shut it was a case of focussing and carrying on playing for Bolton. They have given me great opportunities.”

He added: “No doubt the speculation will go on but I’ve had speculation for probably a year and a half. It gets a little bit tiring after a while, to be honest.”
