Everton’s David Moyes pleased with much-needed win

Everton manager David Moyes declared himself happy after Everton grabbed their first home win of the season with a 3-1 victory against Wigan Athletic.

The game had been perfectly poised at 1-1 after Franco Di Santo opened for Wigan, only for it to be cancelled out by a header from Everton’s Phil Jagielka. However, Everton snatched a draw from Wigan’s hands with two late goals from super-sub duo Apostolos Vellios and Royston Drenthe.

Moyes revealed he was pleased with both players contribution as they scored their first goals for the club in what he saw as a deserved victory:

“I thought with 15 minutes to go we weren’t going to get it (the winner). We deserved to be in front after the first half but we weren’t and Wigan stuck at it, got a bit better in the second half.”

“They were always dangerous on the break but thankfully in the end we got the goals.” said the Scot.

He admitted he was relieved that the substitutions had paid off:

“We made some changes (in the second half) and for periods it didn’t look as if it was going to work, but it did in the end.”

The Toffees boss added:

“Well, I always thought it was important to get the three points today. We deserved it.”
