Forward Kris Boyd’s supposed move to Major League Soccer could be off after Everton boss David Moyes registered an interest in his fellow Scot.
Boyd is a free agent following a turbulent couple of years in his career which has seen him struggle during a high-profile spell at Championship side Middlesbrough, go on a brief loan spell at Nottingham Forest and play for the Turkish club Eskisehirspor – who he left in December having played just two games, citing that he hadn’t been paid in six months.
The 28-year-old is better known as the highest goalscorer in the history of the Scottish Premier League, having found the net 164 times during spells at Kilmarnock and Rangers – for whom he scored 101 times in 143 appearances between 2006 and 2010, winning two SPL titles and crowned the league’s top scorer on three occasions.
He has spent the whole of January looking to negotiate a move, and had been set to head Stateside following interest from the Kansas City Wizards, Portland Timbers and Houston Dynamo, however Moyes has contacted the forward with a view to a short-term move.
Cashflow problems remain the main issue at Goodison Park, and Moyes has been seeking to bring in a new forward on a shoestring budget. American forward Edson Buddle will not be signed following his unsuccessful trial, which has led Moyes to Boyd.
It is likely that the Everton boss will ask the 18-times Scottish international to come for a trial initially, and with the transfer window not applying to players who are currently unattached, Boyd could wrap up a deal at Everton until the end of the season if he impresses.
