Ferguson warns veterans of competition for places

Sir Alex Ferguson has put Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic on high alert after telling the defenders not to expect to walk back into the first team upon their returns from injury.

Both Red Devils were put on the injury list during the season opener against West Brom, but watched as United beat Tottenham 3-0, with Sir Alex Ferguson fielding the second youngest team of his career.

Phil Jones and Johnny Evans featured as a centre-back partnership alongside Chris Smalling who filled in at right-back.

Ferdinand will be ready to return against Arsenal this weekend, but Serbian stopper Vidic faces three more weeks on the sidelines.

Ferguson couldn’t praise his youngsters enough, and claims the two defenders will struggle to walk back into the side.

Ferguson noted: “Rio and Nemanja are aware of the abilities of the young players, there is no question about that.”

The Scot added: “When they are both fit, or one of them is, I will have a decision to make.”
