With Manchester United topping the pile and looking set for their 12th Premier League title you could be forgiven for thinking that they should stick to the squad that they have, after all if it’s not broken don’t fix it. However had it not been for the inconsistency of teams like Chelsea, Manchester City or Arsenal the league could look oh so different. Sir Alex Ferguson needs to make changes and bring in some new faces to make sure they aren’t relying on other teams failing’s next campaign. This means that many members of the current squad will have to move on.
With the massive success of Hernandez, and Rooney beginning to reach his peak, Berbatov has been left on the bench. At first the position of sitting down would appear to suit his style of play (honestly, he barely moves a muscle whilst on the pitch) but he was not happy after Ferguson’s choice to place him on the bench for the game against Bolton. Whilst this is only one game it could be a sign of things to come and if this is the case then Berbatov is surely leaving Old Trafford.
However even if he does wish to leave there is one thing blocking out many clubs from purchasing his services, finance. He would much rather be paid his £110,000 a week contract whilst on the bench than receive a considerably less amount but play week in week out. Therefore one of the “big clubs” will have to buy him. Chelsea need a new striker and whilst Manchester City have the money, they do not have Jesus as a negotiator. Striking up a deal between Man United and Man City would be near impossible.
Tom Cleverley is another player that could move in the next transfer window. He has gone from strength to strength at Wigan, where he has been on loan. It would be a shock to most if he did move to the Lancashire club on a permanent basis. However if a bigger club than Wigan, that could offer him more first team experience, than Manchester United, were to come along then a move for Tom Cleverly could very much be on the cards.
After Darren Bent’s shock move from Sunderland to Aston Villa last transfer window Steve Bruce has been after a good striker. They currently have Danny Welbeck on loan from Manchester United and it appears that he would be the perfect acquisition. The only problem with this deal is that it would take a lot of money to prise him away from Manchester United. Whilst Welbeck has proved that he can score goals the chairman of Sunderland would be cautious of spending what could be upwards of £15 million.
In the summer with the purchase of Bebe and Hernandez, Michael Owen has moved drastically down the United pecking order. It was a surprise to most when he did initially sign for Manchester United and unfortunately injury has hampered his career, as ever with Owen. He could do with showing people how he can play and he won’t achieve this by sitting on the bench. For one of the average Premiership sides he would be the perfect buy, such as Wolves or Bolton. He would also not cost that much to buy, his wages aren’t massive and as it said in his own advertisement booklet, he is an “attractive man”. Not entirely what this has to do with football but it made Manchester United snap him up.
With Nani, Anderson, Valencia and Obertan in their squad it is clear to see that Sir Alex Ferguson cannot please all of them. Whilst it would be amazing for British football to see the great actor that is Nani depart from our shores and never return he is just too good. I think that Obertan’s career at Manchester United could be over very soon. Maybe a trip back to his home country of France would suit both him and Man United.
