They need a win here for very different reasons of course, with the Black Cats fighting for their lives at the bottom and the Blues looking to move closer to the top. The points are just as precious to either side though.
Rafa Benitez will have been pleased that misfiring Fernando Torres finally found some form with a brace against Nordsjaelland midweek, and although the Blues are seven matches without a win, they could put that right here. 5/6 looks a generous bet as the Black Cats are plummeting down the table as a relegation battle looks on the cards.
Elsewhere, Swansea City will be looking to continue their good run of form against Norwich City, who themselves are on a nine-game unbeaten streak. Both are in superb spirits coming into this one and it has the makings of a very entertaining 90 minutes. The Swans humiliated Arsenal last week, winning 2-0, while the Canaries are now unbeaten in eight in the Premiership.
Chris Hughton’s side are now a very difficult side to beat, and having won in Wales last season, could be the Swans bogey team, and 7/2 for the away win looks worth a play.
Aston Villa have not had the best start to life under Paul Lambert and they will be desperate for a win when they take on Stoke City at Villa Park. The Potters have really turned a corner in recent weeks though and with 13 points taken from a possible fifteen in the league, will be coming here full of confidence.
Also, Arsenal need to return to some form when they take on a West Bromwich Albion side that have lost their last two. The pressure is really on Arsene Wenger, although the players must take the blame for their dismal displays in recent weeks. A loss last week to Swansea was a big blow to confidence, and two consecutive losses at the Emirates would be unthinkable.
1/2 is way too short to be backing the Gunners, and those seeking a little value could do alot worse than back Steve Clark’s side at a nice price of 6/1.
There are then two massive games in terms of the relegation battle taking place as well, with Queens Park Rangers travelling to Wigan Athletic and Southampton hosting Reading.
QPR will be heading to Wigan looking for their first win, but the home side know a defeat could leave them in the bottom three when the final whistle goes.
Harry Redknapp has stopped the rot at Loftus Road with two consecutive draws, while Roberto Martinez’s side have suffered four defeats in their last five, signalling a return to a possible relegation battle. The Latics must also make do without Gary Caldwell and Maynor Figueroa, who are both suspended for the game, which makes the 2/1 available on QPR a decent bet.
Southampton and Reading are both currently in the drop zone and it is games like this that they both really need to be taking a result from.
The Saints are the side in better form as they have lost just one in five, whilst the Royals have taken nothing from their last three, as the 10/11 on Nigel Adkins side to take all the points looks the play.
Another superb afternoon of action is all but guaranteed.
