The first clash sees second seed Maria Sharapova lock horns with third seed Victoria Azarenka in what is sure to be a superb watch between two of the best players on the women’s circuit right now.
Both have looked in good form in Paris over the last couple of weeks, but last year’s French Open Champion Sharapova is being tipped as the 5/6 favourite to make it to the final.
The Russian had to fight back from a set down in the quarter-final against Jelena Jankovic to take the match 0-6 6-4 6-3. She turned on the style in the final two sets and showed her class. With the knowhow she has at Roland Garros, Sharapova will come into this one full of confidence.
She can’t, however, allow a player like Azarenka a head start as her opponent is sure to punish any mistakes. A consistent performance is needed from Sharapova.
As for Azarenka, she has dropped just one set in the tournament so far and looks to be playing some superb tennis.
She is sure to feel fresh coming into this one after a 6-3 6-0 victory in the round of eight and if at her best, there is no doubt the Belarusian can upset the odds somewhat this afternoon. A bet on the number three seed gives you odds of 11/10, which some might see as decent value.
As mentioned, these two are up there with the best that women’s tennis has to offer right now and this semi-final could go right to the wire.
After this one, tournament favourite Serena Williams goes head to head with Sara Errani in an encounter that many expect the former to win comfortably.
The American has surprisingly only won at Roland Garros once in the past and that came back in 2002, so she is sure to be desperate for the win this time out.
She needed all three sets in the previous round, but is still the big 1/14 favourite to win today. As we know, if at her best, there is no one better that Williams and she can be destructive when in the mood.
Errani is the number five seed for the French Open though, so shouldn’t be written off for this clash and at 10/1, a few might see her as a decent bet.
The Italian was the runner-up here last year and has come back even stronger in 2013 as she is yet to drop a set in the singles competition. Errani comes here in very good shape and could give Serna Williams more of a match than many people think.
We are all set for a very entertaining day of semi-final action from Paris and both matches look as though they could be closely-fought encounters. The actions gets underway from 2pm, with Williams and Errani set to be on court at 4pm.
