Fulham boss Jol staying quiet on Dempsey as Liverpool ponder bid

Fulham boss Martin Jol is refusing to comment on speculation linking Clint Dempsey with a move away to Liverpool this summer but admits he wants to retain his services.

The United States international enjoyed a sensational season at Craven Cottage scoring 23 goals but is coming into the final year of his contract having arrived at the club from New England Revolution in 2007.

Reds boss Brendan Rodgers has made no secret of his desire to bring attacking midfielder Dempsey to Anfield after missing out on Gylfi Sigurdsson to Tottenham Hotspur.

“Clint is a player we’ve enquired about, it is as simple as that,” Rodgers said.

“Ian Ayre, our managing director, has spoken with (Fulham) to see what the position is. That is where we’re at. Clint is a very talented player but we don’t like to talk about other clubs’ players.”

The Cottagers insist they’ve received no bids for the 29-year-old as they formulate a plan to convince him to sign a new contract and remain in West London.

Jol is desperate to retain Dempsey’s services ahead of the new Premier League campaign but is refusing to be drawn into speculation regarding his future.

“I don’t want to talk about that (speculation),” the manager told the Fulham Chronicle.

“I love Clint, he scored a lot of goals and I want to keep him.”

It’s reported that Fulham want for £10 million to part with their prized asset which could prove too much for Liverpool limited transfer budget meaning negotiations are certain to linger on.
