In the build up to the game United manager Van Gaal revealed that he would be contesting the FA charge he faces comments made about the referee following his side’s fourth round draw with Cambridge on January 23.

“I am not angry, I am very disappointed,” said Van Gaal. “I am now for nearly 30 years a trainer-coach or manager and I have never been charged.

“And still, up to now, I don’t think that I said something wrong.”

“I said already in our press conference, the same phrases, because I know in advance [of the tie] that everything is in favour of the underdog. You, as media, has confirmed that. It’s always like that.

“I said it in front [before] the game and I said it after the game, only in the meaning of the general feeling of everybody, everybody for the underdog.

“So I cannot imagine the FA has charged me. But, okay, it’s like that. Of course I will contest it. I never said anything wrong.”

“You can confirm, as the media, that I never say anything about the referee, in all the matches I have played.”

Asked if he felt he was being singled out because he was the manager of United, Van Gaal said: “If say that, then I am maybe righly charged, so I don’t say it.”

Van Gaal has until 5pm on Monday to respond the charge, by which time he hopes his team will have consolidated their third place position in the league.

West Ham meanwhile could have Cheikhou Kouyaté available again with the midfielder out with an injury since New Year’s Day however James Tomkins and Winston Reid are both doubts for the game while Carl Jenkinson and James Collins are also struggling to make the squad.
