It is considered by many as the biggest race that Jump Racing has to offer and anyone who is lucky enough to have a ticket is likely to see a very entertaining race.
You only have to look at the names that have won this in the past to see why it is such a prestigious event.
Over recent years, the likes of Kauto Star, Imperial Commander and Long Run have all take the crown and it is no surprise to see that trainers such as Paul Nicholls and Nicky Henderson have produced multiple winners here.
What might shock a few though is that champion Irish trainer, Willie Mullins, has never come out on top in the Gold Cup.
That could all chance this weekend as he has the impressive Sir Des Champs in fine form and ready to run.
The French gelding has enjoyed the Festival over the last two years, winning the Martin Pipe Conditional Handicap Hurdle in 2011 and then the Jewson Novices’ Chase last time out. He has worked his way to a place in the Gold Cup and with Mullins desperate for success, he could prove to be decent value at 4/1.
Paul Nicholls hasn’t had as many winners as he would have liked this week, but Silviniaco Conti is in with a shot of landing the biggest prize of them all on Friday afternoon.
Another French horse that is in fine form, Silviniaco Conti will be partnered by Ruby Walsh, so he does have one of the best in the business steering him. Nicholls’ charge is being offered at 9/2, which offers good each-way value.
Cheltenham’s most successful trainer, Nicky Henderson, has the current favourite though in the shape of Bobs Worth.
At 11/4, you might think Bobs Worth is a little bit short as he has only ran one this term, but that was a good win at Newbury over this distance.
Henderson has clearly been saving him for the Gold Cup and it is going to take something special to beat him. The trainer could also run Long Run and with the knowhow he has in this race, 6/1 could be the best value you are going to get for this encounter.
This is what the Cheltenham Festival is all about – world class jockeys, trainers and horses battling it out for the biggest prize and bragging rights for the next twelve months.
It has been a superb week and the Betfred Gold Cup is going to all but round-off the action for another year.
There are other big races on Friday of course – such as the JCB Triumph Hurdle and the Albert Bartlett Novices’ Chase – but nothing comes close to the Gold Cup so sit back and watch one of the biggest sporting events of the year unfold.
It should be a cracker.
