Looking at the format quickly, there are eight groups of four players to begin with and a round-robin style is adopted.

The top two then qualify for the knockout stages with the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final taking place.

In the last five years, Phil Taylor has won this tournament four times with 2010 his only failure since 2007 in the Grand Slam of Darts. Last year, he defeated Gary Anderson in the final and ahead of the 2012 event, he is the favourite once again.

There are some other high-quality contenders though. Adrian Lewis is always a threat, while Simon Whitlock is in fine form. You then have James Wade, Gary Anderson and Raymond van Barneveld who, on their day, can beat anyone else in the world – including Taylor.

Young Dutchman Michael Van Gerwen is then one to watch too and many think he can thrive under the format of this week’s tournament. He won the World Grand Prix of darts last month and wants to follow this success up with another high-profile win.

It could be a surprise winner from further afield though. Look at 2010 winner Scott Waites. Nobody was talking about him as a genuine contender prior to the tournament in Hull, but he beat some big names on the way to his first World Masters title.

Taylor is the one to beat, but anything could happen over the course of this entertaining tournament.

The pick of Saturday’s matches sees Waites go up against Mark Webster.
