London Irish have announced their second big transfer coup in as many weeks with the signing of England centre and rugby league convert Shontayne Hape. This news comes just after Irish announced the signing of Scotland and Northampton centre Joe Ansbro.
It is believed Hape signed a two year deal and Irish will look to him to fill the hole left by Seilala Mapusua, who will leave the club for Japan at the end of season. With the signing of Ansbro as well, Irish have equipped themselves with two International centres, both of whom have seen a lot of playing time in this year’s RBS Six Nations.
Irish head coach Toby Booth said: “I have been very impressed with Shontayne since his move to rugby union.”
“We have a lot of young talent coming through the club and the experience that Shontayne brings will also help them to develop further.” Bath were keen to retain Hape, who has started every game since his debut in June 2010, but talks broke down last week. Bath’s loss will certainly be Irish’s gain as they look to retain their attacking reputation.
