Ivanovic urges Modric to join Chelsea

Branislav Ivanovic has told Tottenham midfielder Luka Modric to join him at Chelsea as ‘needs to move to a bigger club’ Sky Sports reports.

Modric international looks certain to leave White Hart Lane this simmer following Harry Redknapp’s departure with Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho reportedly preparing a bid.

The Blues spent much of the last summer trying to prise the Croatian international away from Spurs but couldn’t persuade chairman Daniel Levy to sell and are reportedly set to try again this year.

Speculation has gathered that the West London club along, with long-term admirers Manchester United, are set to try and tempt Levy into parting with Modric for £35m after he starred for his country at Euro 2012.

The Champions League winners have spent big already in pre-season with Eden Hazard and Marko Marin arriving at Stamford Bridge as owner Roman Abramovich and manager Roberto Di Matteo strive to freshen up their playing squad.

And Ivanovic feels the time is right for the 26-year-old to join one of Europe’s elite clubs for the good of his career and has urged him to snub interest from Old Trafford and link up with him at Chelsea

“Chelsea need a player like him,” the Serbian defender told Sportske Novosti.

“He is a really great player and wouldn’t need long to adapt to a new club.

“He has been playing in England for a while now, he knows the Premier League, he has the right mentality and knows how to play on the level required at Chelsea.

“I’m sure that he needs something new in his career. He needs to move to a bigger club.

“I believe at Chelsea he would become an even better player. I urge him to come to Chelsea – he won’t regret it.”
