Blackburn Rovers boss Steve Kean has told Queens Park Rangers they will need to pay a “chunky figure” to sign Junior Hoilett this summer.
The 22-year-old winger is free to leave Ewood Park after his contract expired and Kean believes he has already agreed terms with Rangers after beating off interest from Newcastle United and Borussia Monchengladbach.
But, Under FIFA rules, Rovers will be entitled to compensation for the Canadian international, who joined their academy at the age of 13 and was a stand out player last term as the club were relegated to the Championship.
Kean revealed R’s manager Mark Hughes has yet to make an offer for Hoilett and compared the situation to that of Daniel Sturridge which saw Chelsea have to pay £6 million following his departure from Manchester City.
“We haven’t heard anything from Junior. I believe he has signed for QPR but that has not been confirmed yet.
“I think he has had a medical but we haven’t been told that officially from QPR – we just heard on the grapevine.
“I don’t know the process now. They might make us an offer for his registration but if not it might go to a tribunal.
“We feel we have played a large part in his development. We wish him all the best but it would have been nice if we had a call.
“I don’t know what the figure was for Daniel Sturridge, but I know it was a chunky figure.
Kean warned QPR that Blackburn are prepared to let a tribunal decide the fee as it could leave them with a significantly greater windfall that will go towards bolstering his squad.
It’s thought officials from the West London club want confirmation of Hoilett’s work permit before finalising the deal with an agreement rumoured to be imminent.
