Kenny Dalglish calls for tough resolve in derby clash

Liverpool manager, Kenny Dalglish, knows more than most what is exactly on the line in a Merseyside derby, and is rallying his players ahead of this weekend’s fixture against Everton.

The game will mark the 216th Merseyside derby and the Scot has said that his side must stay calm if they are to win.

The former Reds player said: “The most important thing for us is to be confident, composed and have the belief we can win the game. It is up to us to get that into our players and get them to believe it.”

Playing in more than a few of the fixtures himself, Dalglish added: “You have to earn things you want in this life and if we want three points from Goodison on Saturday then we will need to stand up and be counted because they will make it difficult for us.”

After a big spending year at Anfield, the manager is hoping that some of that talent will shine in the match against a club who spent nothing and were limited to loans and free transfers.

Dalglish noted: “We keep saying we’ve got a stronger squad than last year, so that means the competition will be greater as well. The better the players play when they’re given the opportunity, the greater the competition will be.”

He went on to say: “I wouldn’t say the starting XI is settled and I wouldn’t say the competition will die off either. I don’t think there is anybody here who is not competing for a first-team spot, and that’s great for us.”
