Regarded as one of the sporting highlights of Boxing Day, the King George VI Chase at Kempton is shaping up to be a Christmas cracker this year.

Known as one of the key trials for the Cheltenham Gold Cup, plenty of questions will be answered in this year’s renewal as all the top-class three mile chasers go into battle to land the valuable Grade One.

Heading the market for the race is the 2010 King George and 2011 Gold Cup winner Long Run, whose form since that epic season has dropped but does look on the verge of getting that sparkle back.

He is a strong 5/2 chance at the head of the betting with such firms as Ladbrokes, William Hill and Coral.

There is a suggestion that Nicky Henderson’s charge has gone backwards since his Gold Cup win and has questions to answer against the new generation of chasers that are arguably of a better standard than the horses Long Run has been competing against in recent seasons.

He finished second in last year’s King George behind the evergreen Kauto Star, but shaped like a horse that didn’t seem overly comfortable with the speedy nature of the three miles around Kempton.

The predicted soft conditions should make it more of a stamina test, which will suit Long Run, and he does have arguably the strongest form in the book, after his seasonal reappearance run, where he finished behind Silviniaco Conti. However, as a betting proposition, he is easily swerved as there is so much potential talent waiting to dethrone him.

The standard of the second season chasers is very high and the likes of Cue Card, Kauto Stone, Grands Crus and Sir Des Champs all look capable of overturning Long Run.

The most likely challenger to get the better of Long Run, according to the markets, is the Colin Tizzard-trained Cue Card. The 2010 Cheltenham Bumper winner was one of last season’s leading novice chasers but made a significant step up when he won the Grade Two Haldon Gold Cup at Exeter last month by 26 lengths.

That performance announced himself on the scene, and there is a feeling his enthusiastic jumping style will suit Kempton’s tight track down to the ground.

There are doubts surrounding his ability to stay three miles in ground as soft as predicted at Kempton, but that is factored into his price of 9/2 with Paddy Power, which has been very popular in the build-up to the race.

Next in the betting at 6/1 with Ladbrokes is last season’s Ryanair Chase winner, Riverside Theatre, who has been specifically laid out for this race.

He finished third behind Long Run and Kauto Star in 2010 but has been plagued by injuries since. That said, he still is a top-class performer and will have Henderson’s number one jockey on board, Barry Geraghty, whilst Long Run is being ridden by amateur Sam Waley-Cohen.

The horse is best when fresh, which he will be for the King George, but he just may lack the required jumping skills to land a blow against the calibre of opposition.

Champion trainer Paul Nicholls may have lost his first choice King George contender Al Ferof to injury but he can rely on Kauto Stone, a half-brother to the five-time King George winner Kauto Stone, to do his stable proud.

He won a Graded race in Ireland in November and will be one the runners you can say handles conditions, but he is very inexperienced and will need to improve to trump the likes of Long Run and Cue Card.
