Bayer Leverkusen will be looking to re-ignite their push for a European place this weekend when they host a Augsburg side that are in the middle of a relegation battle on Saturday afternoon.
The home side will have to pick themselves up from Tuesday evening’s 3-1 defeat at home to Barcelona in the Champions League, refocusing their attention to domestic matters in the process.
As things stand in the Bundesliga, Leverkusen are comfortably adrift of finishing in the Champions League places again this year, while they are only holding onto a Europa League place on goal difference with 15 games remaining.

Quite simply, Robin Dutt’s men need to go on a decent run in the league and consolidate their position in the top six at the very least. They have only won three of their last 10 Bundesliga games and they need more regular victories in the remaining few weeks.
As for Augsburg, well they are arguably in more desperate need of the points. If Leverkusen are worried about their place in Europe for next season, Augsburg are extremely concerned about their place in the top-flight next season.
Looking at the league table going into this weekend, Jos Luhukay’s team – who were promoted from the second division last season – are 17th and two points adrift from safety. All is not lost though as they are still in touch and after three successive draws, they are showing some fight.
Conceding goals has been a real problem for them this season though. They have conceded 47 goals in Bundesliga so far, which averages out at over two per game. They have scored the most goals of the bottom five clubs though, so if they can tighten up their defence, they are capable going forward.
There is no doubt that it is a tough test for Augsburg this weekend though and they will be extremely hopeful that Leverkusen are mentally tired from their Champions League exploits during the week.
When the two teams met earlier this season, Leverkusen ran riot with a 4-1 victory and there will be many predicting a similar score line from 2.30pm on Saturday afternoon.
