Chelsea FC’s rumoured summer transfer target Alvaro Pereira has signed a new four year deal meaning he could remain with Porto until at least 2016.
The wing-back was heavily linked with a move over the summer with Chelsea and Liverpool both monitoring the 25 year old however neither club were prepared to pay the full £26m asking fee for the Uruguayan. Whilst the new extension does relatively little to suggest he could move on next summer, his release clause, that of £26m shall remain but the length of his new deal could mean Porto either putting teams off tracking him or possibly adding more value to the pacey defender.
Pereira had been one of Andre Villas-Boas’ top players whilst he was in charge of the Europa League Champions but Chelsea fans will take note that the wing-back’s former team mate, Falcao, also signed an extension to his contract, just a few months before moving on to Spanish side Atletico Madrid.
Chelsea were rumoured to have had a bid rejected for Pereira during the summer and the extension does beg the question as to whether it is really necessary when they might still consider selling him for the right price.
