Liverpool join the race to sign Eredivisie talisman

Liverpool are the latest side to be associated with a move for versatile Ajax captain, Jan Vertonghen.

Vertonghen, who plays primarily as a central defender, is capable of playing anywhere on the left as well as defensive midfield.

The 24 year-old, believed to be being monitored by Chelsea and Arsenal, has become renowned for his attacking nature, regularly assisting his teammates when it comes to moving into the opposition’s half.

The defender has also made 34 appearances for the Belgian national side, scoring two goals in the process and forming an effective partnership with Arsenal stopper, Thomas Vermaelen.

Liverpool signed Sebastian Coates and Jose Enrique over the summer but were forced to let go of Sotirios Kyrgiakos and Christian Poulsen, and with Jamie Carragher showing his age more these days, an experienced head is needed.

Vertonghen has now made over 130 appearances for Ajax and could act as a guide for youngsters Martin Kelly and Jon Flanagan, having come from one of the most prestigious youth academies in the world.

Liverpool will, however, be looking to shed some excess weight before they make any big money moves for the £20m rated defender however, with Fabio Aurelio, Martin Skrtel, Danny Wilson and Daniel Agger all being linked with an Anfield exit.
