Liverpool legend lends medals to Wembley

Souness has provided his medals to the exhibitionLiverpool legend Graeme Souness has loaned his European Cup winners medals from 1978, ’81 and ’84 to a new display at Wembley Stadium labelled ‘The Exhibition of Champions’.

The Scottish midfield genial was a pivotal part of the in the ’78 final as the Reds claimed a 1-0 victory over FC Bruges at Wembley with his clever pass releasing Kenny Dalglish to score the winning goal.

Speaking at the exhibition the 58-year-old, who also managed at Anfield for three years in the early nineties, revealed his delight at seeing his medals take pride of place and recalling the feeling of his first European triumph.

Souness said: “To win my very first European Cup in my very first season at Liverpool was an amazing feeling and the fact that it took place at Wembley Stadium just made it all the more special.

“I will always have great memories of playing at Wembley which is why I have donated my medals to the Exhibition of Champions.”

His medals will now sit alongside an arrangement of other prize artefacts to celebrate 56 years of European Football history with fellow Reds midfielder Steven Gerrards captains armband from that famous night in Istanbul on display.

David Beckham’s number seven shirt from Manchester United’s 1999 success and the boots worn by Zinedine Zidane in Real Madrid’s 2002 winning campaign are also included in the exhibition which is supported by UEFA and will now form form part of the Wembley Stadium tour.
