Liverpool tell Carroll to decide on future amid Newcastle talk

Liverpool have told Andy Carroll to decide on his future before the transfer deadline with talk of a move to Newcastle United resurfacing the Mirror report.

The Merseyside club will sit down with the England striker this week to inform him that he will be confined to the substitutes bench  unless he decides whether he wants to leave Anfield before the window closes.

Brendan Rodgers wants to freshen up his attacking options at Anfield with Carroll not figuring in his plans and a return to his Tyneside roots is the forwards preferred option.

Newcastle saw a loan bid turned down by Rodgers last month but manager Alan Pardew is still determined to bring him back to St James’ Park just 18-months after his astonishing £35 million move to the Reds.

It’s understood the Magpies are still hoping to broker a temporary deal that will see them take the 23-year-old on loan until the end of the season with an option to make it permanent for £12m.

Carroll is currently valued at £20m and Rodgers won’t sell unless that is matched but Pardew is confident he can capitalise on the Northern Irisman’s desire to offload the player to negotiate a lower fee.

However a source close to Liverpool said that would’t happen saying: “We will only do what is best for Liverpool Football Club, and that means we need time to find replacements if any players go.”

That now leaves the ball firmly in the Geordie hit man’s court and a decision over whether he will commit to his current employers expected before they face Manchester City on sunday.
Carroll is determined to force through a switch back to Newcastle having rejected moves to West Ham United, Aston Villa and Fulham in the last month but may be forced to consider his options if they fail to meet his valuation.
