Liverpool unlikely to tempt Bundesliga defender out of Champions League football

Liverpool FC are likely to struggle to tempt Bayer Leverkusen defender Michal Kadlec from joining the Anfield club with his Bundesliga side already qualified for the Champions league next season.

The 26 year old, who was said to be “flattered” by Liverpool’s interest earlier in the season helped Leverkusen to an impressive runners-up spot in the German first division just behind Borussia Dortmund meaning Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich will be required to qualify through an extra round to make it to the group stages.

Liverpool are in need of a left-back and do not believe they will be able to tempt Leighton Baines into a Merseyside switch nor provide Newcastle United left back Jose Enrique with a bigger deal than is currently on offer at the Tyneside club. This leaves Czech international Michal Kadlec who has scored six goals since joining Leverkusen in 2008 from Sparta Prague.

However, qualifying for the Champions League is considered to be some feat for the German side who were last in the European competition in 2002 and it will be difficult to ask Kadlec to sit out of the competition and move to Merseyside in the hope they can qualify by finishing in the top four next season.

Whilst Liverpool have also been linked with the likes of Cissokho from Lyon and 25 year old Nacho Monreal who plays for Ossasuna, it is believed Kadlec is Liverpool’s preferred choice for the left back position although one fears that the opportunity of dropping the chance to play in Europe’s elite competition may be too much of to ask of the Czech defender, for this year at least.
