Liverpool are set to lose out on current Barcelona midfielder Ibrahim Afellay as Bayern Munich step up their game after the sacking of Luis van Gaal yesterday.
Whilst van Gaal was already heading out of Munich at the end of the season with his replacement Jupp Heynckes to depart Bayer Leverkusen in the summer, the Bundesliga giants are in the market for the talented Afellay, hoping to make the 25 year old an integral part of the club for the 2011/2012 season.
It had been reported at the weekend that Liverpool could be about to attract the Dutchman to Merseyside where he would join his fellow countryman Dirk Kuyt however with Munich also in the game the Anfield side could lose out.
For Afellay it is a case of joining any top club next season having failed to find a starting place regularly for the Spanish giants and although Barca may be reluctant to let him leave after just a handful of appearances, it has been reported that a bid of anything between £5m-£7m could be enough to tempt the Spanish side into selling.
With Bayern Munich much more likely to be in a position to offer Champions League football than Liverpool, Afellay, who wants to play more to stay in touch with the Holland international set up, may see the Bundesliga as the better option in the summer.
