Liverpool to sell duo in order to fund Sturridge bid – Tuesday Rumour Round-up

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is considering a last-minute swoop for Chelsea striker Daniel Sturridge and is prepared to sell Charlie Adam AND Stewart Downing to fund the deal. Sturridge is out-of-favour at Stamford Bridge and Blues chief Roberto Di Matteo is willing to part with the England striker for £15 million. Having spent nearly £30m on new players this summer Rodgers knows he needs to balance the books and will sacrifice Adam and Downing whilst Andy Carroll could also be sold back to former club Newcastle. The Mirror

Black Cats close to signing Dempsey – Sunderland are close to their third signing in the space of seven days after it emerged a deal for Clint Dempsey is nearing completion with talks thought to be at an advanced stage with Fulham. The American is desperate to leave Craven Cottage and effectively went on strike last week in order to force through a move to Liverpool whose interest has since cooled. It now looks like Dempsey is on his way to the Stadium of Light with Martin O’Neill setting a deadline of Wednesday to complete the transfer which is thought to be worth £8 million. Metro

Hammers eye sensational Cole move – Joe Cole could be set for a stunning return to West Ham as Brendan Rodgers continues to trim his squad as the transfer window prepares to shut its doors. The former England winger has endured a torrid time at Anfield since signing from Chelsea on a free transfer three years ago and has struggled to make an impact due to injury. He spent last season on loan at Lille recapturing the form that propelled him to stardom as a teenager at Upton Park and Sam Allardyce is now set to bring the 30-year-old back to his roots. talkSPORT

Chelsea and Newcastle chase French defender – Montpellier defender Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa is the subject of interest from Chelsea and Newcastle after scouts from both clubs ran the rule of the 23-year-old at the weekend. Magpies boss Alan Pardew is desperate to bolster his defensive options and wants the versatile French international to challenge Steven Taylor and captain Fabricio Coloccini for a starting spot. Roberto Di Matteo is also keen to sign a centre back in the wake of David Luiz being linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge. Daily Mail

Damiao not moving to Spurs – Internacional president Luciano Davi has closed the book on Leandro Damiao’s potential move to Tottenham this summer insisting the striker is staying put. The Brazilian international has been heavily linked with a move to White Hart Lane but now looks set to stay in his homeland after Davi reaffirmed his assertion that the club have decided to retain his services. Sporting Life
