It was always going to be a tough evening for the Reds as they were taking on a Zenit that had been playing in the Champions League this season, but Brendan Rodgers would have been frustrated to concede two goals in just three second-half minutes.
The odds on them qualifying are now out at 10/3 and it is going to take a famous European night at Anfield for the home team to reach the final 16.
They do come into this one on the back of a superb win though as they beat Swansea City 5-0 in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon, so confidence should be high.
Both Philippe Coutinho and Daniel Sturridge were playing on Sunday and were key men in helping the Merseysiders to such an emphatic win. They are cup-tied for this encounter however, which is a big blow for Rodgers and as ever, the big pressure falls on Luis Suarez and Steven Gerrard.
There is always something special about a bit European match under the Anfield lights and although this isn’t the Champions League, you can be sure that the Liverpool faithful will be making a lot of noise on Thursday evening.
Make no doubt about it, the Premier League outfit have a lot of work to do and are going to have to be at their best from start to finish. They have shown this season that they are more than capable of scoring goals though, so should be confident of turning this tie on its head.
As for Zenit, they are likely to come to Anfield with a game plan and will look to frustrate their opponents by remaining solid at the back and then hitting them on the counter attack.
The first leg could not have gone much better for the big-spending Russian side and they know if they grab an early away goal, then Liverpool have to score four, something that is going to be very tough to do.
The first 20 minutes is the most important for Zenit, if they can keep the Reds at bay, then the crowd might become restless, whereas if they concede an early goal, the tie is well-and-truly alive.
As well as being solid at the back, the away team’s front-men have to work their socks off and look to hold the ball up as much as possible, easing the pressure on the defenders.
Zenit can come here full of confidence and know if they perform how they did in the first leg, then they are likely to qualify for the final 16. They do look to be great value at 9/2 to win this one on the night.
With Liverpool having no option but to come out and attack, it should be a superb encounter that gets underway at 8.05PM.
