Manchester United international delighted to make first team return

Manchester United were happy to welcome Darren Fletcher back into the first-team squad on Wednesday night, after the midfielder made his first appearance for the team since suffering a virus near the end of last season.

The Scotland captain played a role in the 1-1 draw against Benfica in United’s first group game of the 2011-12 Champions League.

Sir Alex Ferguson started the game with a weakened squad, leaving several players out of the starting line-up with a watchful eye on Sunday’s clash against Chelsea.

Fletcher commented on being reunited with his team, stating: “I know the lads have been playing fantastically well at the beginning of the season, some great football and some fantastic results, so it is going to be difficult.”

He added: “He [Ferguson] made six or seven changes, everyone who came in looked comfortable and there was an eye towards the big game on Sunday which makes competition for places good.”
