Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini is lining up a swoop for Borussia Dortmund Mats Hummels according to reports after losing Vincent Kompany to a lengthy suspension.
The 23-year-old German has been a revelation for the Bundesliga champions ever since joining the club in 2009 forming an excellent partnership with Neven Subotic with the pair leading Dortmund to the best defensive record in the top-flight. Hummels has now attracted interest from the Premier League with Mancini keen boost their numbers at he back after losing their captain at the weekend.
The Italian is concerned about the strength of his defensive options as his side continue to battle for honours on three fronts and is prepared to dip his toes into the transfer market after seeing Kompany suspended for the next four games, Kolo Toure jet off to the African Cup of Nations and Stefan Savic struggle to adapt to life in England.
A shaky display in the Carling Cup against Liverpool on Wednesday failed to convince Mancini that he can step in and fill the breach with Joleon Lescott is the only experience central defender available to the City boss at the moment. A move for the former Bayern Munich man now looks to be on the cards for City with a number of crack beginning to form in the armour.
Hummels certainly won’t come cheap though with Dortmund likely to command a hefty fee before they’d even think of letting him leave the Westfalenstadion. It’s thought City are also keeping tabs on his central defensive partner Subotic who has garnered interest from around Europe with the likes of AC Milan, Chelsea and Manchester United all on his tail.
