Manchester City will rival Chelsea for the signature of Fiorentina striker Stevan Jovetic this summer according to the Metro.
Roberto Mancini is frantically stepping up his search for a new forward after Sergio Aguero was stretchered off with a knee injury in City’s opening game of the season against Southampton on Sunday.
The Montenegro international has now emerged as a serious target with the Premier League champions apparently having already tested the Viola water with an offer that was immediately rebuffed.
Chelsea have been heavily linked with Jovetic but have been put off by the Florence clubs £25 million valuation after spending over £80m on new signings in the close season.
Rumours have circulated that Roberto Di Matteo is planning a cash-plus-player offer involving Yossi Benayoun but they could be blown out of the water by City.
Mancini has the funds to meet Fiorentina’s asking price but he may be thwarted in his efforts to bring the talented 22-year-old to the Etihad Stadium by Juventus.
The Italian champions have held a long-standing interest in Jovetic and are prepared to move for him after failing to bring Luis Suarez and Robin Van Persie to Turin.
Meanwhile, Marseille full back Cesar Azpilcueta admits he is open to a move to Stamford Bridge believing it to be a deal that will benefit both parties.
The 22-year-old has been linked with a move to the Blues for some time and says a £7m move to West London would benefit his current employers as they attempt to slash their wage bill.
Reports are suggesting the Spaniard is close to joining the Champions League holders and the transfer could be completed this week.
“Everyone thinks it’s been a tough time with my thoughts split between Marseille and Chelsea,” Azpilicueta said in the Daily Mirror.
“But if my departure can help Marseille’s finances, it’s good for everyone.”
