Man City prepared to let Adebayor join Spurs for nothing

Tottenham Hotspur could pick Emmanuel Adebayor up on a free transfer with Manchester City set to cut their losses on the striker the Mirror reports.

Manager Roberto Mancini is desperate to remove £12m-rated Adebayor, who earns £170,000-per-week, off the wage bill and were prepared to let him leave for a cut-price fee.

City agreed to sell the former Arsenal forward below valuation to help Spurs match his wages and remove a major obstacle that is stopping them from bidding for Robin Van Persie.

White Hart Lane Chairman Daniel Levy looked set to seal a £6 million deal for the 28-year-0ld only to see it collapse over personal terms leaving the Premier League champions exploring the option of letting him go for nothing.

A City insider said: “It was felt there was two ways to handle Adebayor. Either we could ask for a fee in excess of £10m knowing we would have to spend perhaps half of that compensating the player for lost earnings.

“Or, by asking £6m, the buying club would be able to offer wages acceptable to Adebayor.

“Tottenham knew that was our intention. Now they want us to accept the lower fee and pay Adebayor off.

“Basically they want a player who scored the goals that took them to fourth place in the Premier League last season for nothing.”

It seems certain that City will have to pay-off the last two years of Adebayor’s contract in order to get him to leave the Etihad Stadium and allow them to step up his pursuit of Van Persie.

However, the 28-year-old won’t join the same club as his ex-Gunners teammate and still hasn’t forgiven him stamp which left the Dutchman with a facial injury in September 2009.

Mancin is ready to double his initial bid of £15m to land the coveted forward with rivals Manchester United and Italian champions Juventus also chasing his signature.
