Ajax defender Gregory Van der Wiel is set to be the subject of a bidding war between Premier League duo Chelsea and Manchester City when the transfer window opens in January.
The Dutchman is one of the most sought after players in Europe after his breakthrough at the Amsterdam Arena in 2007 and it now seems he’ll be receiving offers from two of England’s biggest clubs.
Both teams have issues at right back with Stamford Bridge boss Andre Villas-Boas desperate to add a quality defender to his squad after seeing his side ship 15 goals already this season.
Doubts over the defensive qualities of Jose Boswinga have lingered right through the current campaign and it seems that Villas-Boas has identified Van der Wiel as the man to bolster his back line.
City boss Roberto Mancini is also in the hunt for a right sided defender despite a series of impressive performances from his back four and the good form of Micah Richards.
The Italian is reportedly unhappy with the backup he has for that position and want’s to strengthen his squad as they battle for silverware on four fronts.
A bidding war is likely to ensue as both clubs go head-to-head in their attempts to secure the 23-year-old Holland international’s signature.
