Manchester United considering deal for defensive reinforcement

Following an apparent drop of interest in his signature from Arsenal and Newcastle, it seems Manchester United are looking to pick up where the duo left off and could make an offer for Lyon full-back, Aly Cissokho.

Arsenal were being linked with the 24 year-old as they look for cover in the left-back position after the injuries of both Kieran Gibbs and Andre Santos while Newcastle are presumably just looking to strengthen that area of the pitch despite signing Davide Santon over the summer.

One would argue that Manchester United are more than capable in the left side of defence with Patrice Evra currently holding the role more than capably, however transfer speculation suggests the Frenchman’s days at Old Trafford could be coming to an end.

Evra has been associated with a move to Real Madrid over the past two transfer windows and despite the fact that he recently signed a new long-term contract with the club, it seems the Red Devils are still looking to ‘increase competition’ in the spot.

Lyon chief, Jean-Michel Aulas, stated earlier in the month that the Ligue 1 outfit are prepared to let Cissokho leave the club in order to free up funds.

The French side are in desperate need of cover at centre-back and will use the £7.5m gained from the expected sale of Cissokho to finance further moves of their own.

Sir Alex Ferguson currently has Fabio as cover for left-back but is understood to be looking at Cissokho as more experienced backup who has potential for a starting slot should 30 year-old Evra leave the club in coming seasons.
