Manchester United defender admits it’s a massive stage to be playing on

Manchester United defender Chris Smalling has admitted that he cannot wait to play on the bigger stages in European football as the Old Trafford club begin to reach the business end of the season.

For Smalling his emergence into the United first XI was not anticipated but an injury to Rio Ferdinand has meant a step up into some games even he might not have been expecting.

“The games are coming round thick and fast. It’s another massive stage for myself. To be able to play in these latter stages of the Champions League is what most players in the world would dream to be part of. I can’t wait to play my part. I’ve managed to be involved, play games and keep my momentum going. I don’t feel I’ve got anything to prove.”

The Manchester United centre-back added.

“Even when we played at their place they didn’t create too many chances. We’re going into Wednesday with a lot of confidence, and so we should.”

It is difficult to explain how a player of his ability had not been picked up by United earlier but with these big Premiership and Champions League games coming up, it will not only be a test of character for the youngster, but will be an experience that no one will be able to take away from him.
