Manchester United defender delighted with strength in depth

Manchester United’s stand-in captain John O’Shea has revealed how pleased he was to be named skipper for the Champions League second leg against Schalke on Wednesday evening and also praised the strength in depth of the Old Trafford squad.

United came through the semi final unscathed winning 4-1 to set up a repeat of the 2009 final against Barcelona at Wembley and O’Shea believes the performance highlighted United’s depth within the squad.

“I was delighted the manager named me as captain, it was a fantastic occasion but the most important thing was we got the performance and the win we needed. Some of the performances that the lads put in really showed how strong the squad is. We could have scored a few more goals but we are very happy with the end result.”

The Irishman continued.

“Wembley and Manchester United has a fantastic history but fingers crossed we will have the Premiership wrapped up before then. We watched the game closely against Madrid. They got through it quite well but we can put it to one side. We have three huge games in Manchester United’s history before another massive match.”

Should Manchester United defeat Chelsea on Sunday then only one more point against either Blackburn Rovers or Blackpool will clinch their unprecedented 19th title.
