Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand striving to find fitness

Rio Ferdinand is racing to be fit for this weekend, as Premier League champions Manchester United come up against Stoke City.

Sir Alex Ferguson acknowledges that the Brittania Stadium has become a tough venue to travel to and come away with points, with Liverpool and Tottenham among the latest victims.

The Scot has stated his need for his star centre-back, who has struggled for fitness over recent seasons, but would be a huge asset in the fixture.

Ferguson knows just the impact the 32 year-old can have on the team, commenting: “Rio came into the team when we played at Bolton and gave us that experience, so we hope he’ll be fit for Saturday.”

He added: “When you go to Stoke you need a bit of experience.”
