Manchester United legend Paul Scholes reveals similar Tevez scenario

Ex-Manchester United midfielder, Paul Scholes, says that he can empathise with the current situation of Carlos Tevez after revealing that he once refused to play in a match.

The 36 year-old, who retired from the game this summer, told how Sir Alex Ferguson agreed to play Arsenal a day after the club had a match against Liverpool, and how he came off the bench in the Liverpool but told the manager that he would not be travelling to London for the Arsenal fixture.

Speaking now, Scholes said: “How I was brave enough and stupid enough to do that I don’t know. I have regretted doing it ever since. At the time the first-team players didn’t play in the League Cup games and I just felt the manager was messing me about a bit.”

The veteran added: “Probably driving home I thought there was every chance it could be the end of my career with Manchester United, that probably he would get rid of me now. And he was well within his rights to sack me.”

Scholes evidently sees why Roberto Mancini may choose to terminate the contract of Carlos Tevez, who refused to come off the bench in Tuesday’s 2-0 Champions League loss to Bayern Munich, but also feels sorry for his former Manchester United teammate.

Defending the player, Scholes noted: “I know how Carlos feels, he obviously thinks he is being messed about by Roberto Mancini and he probably has a case with the amount of football he has played.”

Uncertain as anyone involved in the matter, he went on to say: “It is exactly what I did. But it is something he (Tevez) will regret in time. I’m not saying he is right – it’s totally up to the manager what he does.”
