Manchester United midfielder set for three-match fitness test

Darren Fletcher will need to prove his fitness over the next three games for Manchester UnitedManchester United’s Darren Fletcher will be given the opportunity to face Barcelona in the Champions League Final at Wembley should he come through the next three fixtures for the Old Trafford club.

Fletcher unfortunately missed the last final against Barcelona and United manager Sir Alex Ferguson believes enough minutes over the next three games – against Blackburn Rovers, Blackpool and Gary Neville’s Testimonial match – should be enough to see him through to a place in the starting line up.

“Darren has put the weight back on and is back in training, but he has a bit to do yet. But, as far as the final is concerned, there is almost three weeks to achieve that. If he does reach the target, it will be a big boost to us as we all know he is big-game player.”

Fletcher had been suffering from a virus which also affect his weight however the midfielder is on the road back to full recovery.

“It was just a bad virus, one of those things you can’t really prepare for, but I hadn’t foreseen the weight loss that came with it and that was the real problem.”

Fletcher added.

“I couldn’t come back into training until I’d put a good bit of that back on. Instead of two weeks, it ended up being more like five, but I’m feeling much better now.”
