Manchester United are preparing to make a £10 million bid for Everton defender Leighton Baines according to the Daily Mail.
Baines has been on Sir Alex Ferguson’s shopping list for much of the summer and he’s now ready to move for 27-year-old who is valued at £15m by the Toffees.
Manager David Moyes would be unwilling to part with the England international for less than that fee whilst United aren’t prepared to spend that much on a player of his age.
Dimitar Berbatov was the last player over the age of 26 that Ferguson has bought in the last 15-years and bringing Baines to Old Trafford would represent a significant change in his transfer policy.
Signing a new left back has turned out to be a necessity for the Red Devils boss following Patrice Evra’s dip in form last season as he lost focus during the race row with Liverpool’s Luis Suarez.
Fabio Da Silva has also joined Queens Park Rangers on loan whilst youngster Ezekiel Fryers looks set to join Tottenham Hotpsur leaving the 70-year-old short of cover.
Chief executive David Gill is expected to approach the Merseyside club with an offer once he returns from holiday in America and Ferguson is confident of concluding a deal before the Premier League season starts in August.
He is also expected to venture into the transfer market again after unveiling Shinji Kagawa and Nick Powell at a press conference on Thursday.
“We could possibly bring one or two more in,” he said. “When there’s a major international tournament on, there’s a delay in the transfer market. But now the Euros are over we’re trying to bring someone in.”
