Manchester United rejected chance to sign international starlet

It’s been revealed that Manchester United manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, turned down the opportunity to sign Everton youngster, Jack Rodwell, in the summer transfer window.

With the Toffees unwilling to sell experienced talismans such as Phil Jagielka, the cash-strapped club supposedly offered the England Under-21 international to United for just £15m.

The fee seems like a steal at first sight, considering Ferguson was offering above £20m for the midfielder a season ago, however a string of injuries has seen Rodwell’s value drop in the eyes of the United boss.

Rodwell is known to have been on the Red Devils’ wanted list for some time now, and the Premier League champions could return to Goodison Park in January with an offer, but will be expecting to pay somewhere nearer to £10m.

Speaking on Mikel Arteta’s departure to Arsenal, Rodwell said: “Am I ready to step up and fill his boots? Yeah, definitely. I’m ready now. I feel fit, I feel sharp and focused.”

He added: “What I’ve been missing in my career is 30 back-to-back games and getting a good run of form and confidence. This is the season for me.”
