Manchester United are to assess the extent of striker Michael Owen on Thursday after the player was taken off against Otelul Galati on Wednesday evening with a thigh injury.
The Manchester United striker only played close to ten minutes of the match but was involved in the opening goal which see the Old Trafford side requiring a win against Benfica in Manchester to top the group.
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson could not contain his disappointment at Owen’s latest injury and admits to feeling sorry for the 31 year old.
“I really feel for him, he’s a really good player. He made the goal for us, he made a fantastic run to the near post for Phil Jones’ cross and took the defenders with him to leave Antonio Valencia with a simple knock-in.”
Whilst Wednesday evening’s Champions League match was only his fourth game in the competition over the last two-and-a-half years, it had looked likely for Owen to be given more to do over the coming months as fixtures begin to pile up and the heavy Christmas schedule begins to appear over the horizon.
The Manchester United medical team will assess the situation of Owen today with more news likely to follow.
