Before a summer which will inevitably be full of transfer speculation surrounding the youngster, Manchester United are set to make a January move for Crystal Palace youngster, Nathaniel Clyne.
Clyne’s current contract at Selhurst Park is ready to run out in June and before the Premier League elite have the chance to swoop for his signature, Sir Alex Ferguson is seeking to lure him away now.
Numerous clubs have shown interest in the 20 year-old, seeing him as a future England right-back after witnessing a consistent three years in the country’s second tier
Clyne was Crystal Palace’s choice for Young Player of the Year and 2009 and 2010, proceeding to increase the quality of his game accordingly in 2011, winning the Player of the Year accolade.
The meteoric rise of the London-born defender has been rewarded as in his standout year of 2011, Clyne also made a step up on an international scale, making his first appearances for Stuart Pearce’s England Under-21 side.
Clyne has now become an integral part of the Eagle’s starting XI and although Dougie Freedman is trying to persuade his star to extend his stay at the Championship, it’s likely he will fill in his attempts, leaving the London outfit with no choice but to cash in on the £3m-rated right-back.
Ferguson has been unfortunate with his defensive absences this season and following the season-ending injury to Nemanja Vidic, he finds his defence being stretched further and further as the likes of Phil Jones, Rio Ferdinand and the da Silva twins continue to sustain short-term injuries.
Clyne – who has now made over 120 appearances for Palace despite his young age – would fit right in with the English youth legacy that Sir Alex Ferguson is building at Old Trafford and could leave the Scot with just the left-back spot to fill until he finds himself with the future England back-four at his disposal.
Rather than lose their youth product on a free in the summer, the Championship side may take the money from Clyne’s sale this month, with a £3.5m offer likely to be too tempting to turn down.
