Market Bosworth: The Small Village with Huge Dreams

Market Bosworth celebrate yet another victoryIn the Rugby Union U17’s national cup, Market Bosworth rugby club laugh at the name ‘underdogs’… They think it is too complimentary.

The small rugby club in the Midlands were unbeaten this year in the Leicestershire league and were county champions beating Loughborough in the final. This put them in a strong position going into the national cup.

In the first round, Bosworth faced Derby. Derby rugby club in comparison with Market Bosworth is like an elephant to an ant. Derby have a huge area with which they can take players, their first team and colts play at a high level providing players throughout the age groups to the county set up. The latter however are a small club in a village with recently a low level of senior rugby and throughout the age groups, the standard is arguably questionable.

Yet this did not show at all with the Bosworth boys beating Derby at home by 36 points to 0 with an excellent all round display from fly half Chris Chadburn and powerful forward effort. Early in the competition Market Bosworth clearly showed their threat.

Next was Stratford with star player in the backs Liam O’Neill; a side just having beaten an excellent Old Northamptonians side. However this again proved to be a non event with Bosworth again putting a good team to the sword taking them into the Midlands final, and the National Cup quarter final. Yet who dared to think that?

That final saw Bosworth against Paviers of Nottingham. However yet again Market Bosworth prevailed with a thrilling defence keeping the Paviers score at 0. Placing the small village team against arguably the biggest club in the North; Otley.

This match took place on Sunday 17th April at Doncaster Knights’ stadium. Who would have ever dreamed that this club could contend with any club such as Otley? Yet Bosworth indeed dared to dream, and it was they who wrote the script for the game, reigning victorious again with a much closer score line of 24-20.

It was an excellent match with the score swinging in favour from side to side. A nail biting affair for both supporters and coaches watching powerless in the stalls. Market Bosworth seemed undefeatable with an incredible performance from their star forward Tom Handford and an impenetrable defence. This was an all the more impressive victory against a huge pack and well oiled back line.

They shall face Hucclecote in the final which will take place at Franklin’s Gardens, Northampton on Sunday the 1st of May. There will be undoubtedly be many who read the two teams on show and reply…’Market who?’ Yet they would clearly be wrong to do so as this team has proved its worth on the biggest stage and deserves recognition. So clearly the more pressing question is…’Will the Market Bosworth story, have a story book ending?’
