Roberto Martinez is remaining optimistic that he can keep Victor Moses at Wigan Athletic this summer amid speculation that Chelsea are preparing a fresh bid.
The Nigerian international has been the subject of numerous bids from the Blues with Latics chairman Dave Whelan accusing them of ‘taking the mickey’ in June after submitting an offer of around £4 million.
Roberto Di Matteo is anxious to further strengthen his options in attack despite spending heavily in the transfer market to bring in Eden Hazard, Oscar and Marko Marin in order to fill the void left by Didier Drogba and Salomon Kalou.
Moses has been a priority target for the Italian ever since he took the reins at Stamford Bridge but has been unable to persuade Whelan to accept less than his £9m valuation.
But Martinez is confident of fending off the Champions League winners in the next fortnight and says Moses should be pleased to attract interest from clubs of their calibre.
“For Victor it’s been an exciting summer,” he said.
“I spoke with him and told him he should be very proud, as a footballer at 21, to get the interest he has had. It’s something to be happy and extremely proud about and is a football compliment.
“But, if you don’t meet a valuation, it becomes paper talk and speculation. He is a young man and he knows what he did from December to the end of the season was a great level of performance.
“He can take it on to the next level and I am very excited to have Victor at Wigan, and I hope we can keep him for many years to come.”
Di Matteo is expected to make another approach for the 21-year-old who has spent the last two and a half years at the DW Stadium after signing from Championship side Crystal Palace.
