In a repeat of last week’s FA Cup final at Wembley, in which Chelsea emerged victorious, Liverpool returned to Premier League action on Tuesday by dominating a poor Chelsea side, giving the Reds a much need confidence boost.
As expected, both side’s fielded weakened teams following their FA Cup final just three days ago. Liverpool made four changes, Steven Gerrard failed to make an appearance after suffering from a minor back injury, Maxi Rodriguez and Andy Carroll both started.
Chelsea brought Fernando Torres back into the team, replacing Didier Drogba up front. Turnbull made an appearance in goal, with Frank Lampard, Juan Mata and Ashley Cole starting on the bench for the Londoners.
Luis Suarez opened the scoring for Liverpool early on, his skittish dash through the Chelsea defence saw him strike a thunderous effort off Michael Essien and into the back of the net for an own goal.
Liverpool doubled their lead seconds later when Jordan Henderson skipped past a flagging John Terry to slot an easy effort into the back of the net.
Failing to get into the game, Chelsea conceded a Daniel Agger header just before the 30 minute mark, Agger impressively dashed into the center of a corner-kick melee to slot home a thunderous effort past Turnbull in the Chelsea goal.
Chelsea conceded a penalty just minutes before the half-time break, but the score remained at 3-0 nil at half-time after Stewart Downing hit the bar from the spot.
Ramires got one back for Chelsea after the break, the youngster stuck his head on a powerful cross into the box and sloppily hit the ball into the Liverpool net.
Liverpool got their fourth on the hour mark when Ross Turnbull carelessly hit a goal-kick directly at Jonjo Shelvey, who promptly turned the ball around and directed it straight into the net to sum up Chelsea’s horrific evening at Anfield.
