Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker has urged Arsenal to do all they can to reach the top four this season knowing the club can’t afford to miss out on Champions League football.
The German international has played his part in the Gunners start to the season which has seen them fail to win away from the Emirates and suffer humiliating defeats at the hands of Blackburn Rovers and Manchester United.
Mertesacker, an £8 million deadline day signing from Werder Bremen, has encouraged his new team to start picking up more positive results and close the gap on unbeaten Newcastle who currently sit in the desired fourth-spot.
The 27-year-old said: “It’s vital that we reach at least the top four in the league, but at the moment we don’t have the points to speak about that.
“It’s important to perform well to make sure we move up the table. The supporters have to feel we are giving everything to succeed.
“I am here to play football, to play in the Champions League and I want to be successful in all the challenges we face this season.” He added.
“Therefore we have to play hard games twice a week and that’s the challenge of being an Arsenal player.”
Arsene Wenger’s side currently six points behind the Magpies and will need to start winning on a more consistent basis if they are to close the gap with Sunday’s 2-1 home win over Sunderland only the Gunners third victory in the league this season.
